Take that Glenn Beck! Rush Limbaugh, the conservative icon, who's currently battling Beck for pundit supremacy in conservative circles, may buy the NFL's St. Louis Rams, a move that would further boost his influence and power.
According to multiple news outlets, Limbaugh is joining St. Louis Blues owner Dave Checketts in a bid to buy the team. Limbaugh and Checketts are among several bidders for the team, which won the Super Bowl in 1999, but has struggled since star quarterback Kurt Warner left the franchise.
Limbaugh said in a statement: "Dave and I are part of a bid to buy the Rams, and we are continuing the process. But I can say no more because of a confidentiality clause in our agreement . . . We cannot and will not talk about our partners. But if we prevail, we will be the operators of the team."
The Rams' estimated value is $800 million. Owners Chip Rosenbloom and Lucia Rodriguez, the children of Rams' late owner, Georgia Frontiere, were originally asking for $900 million, but the recession and the Rams dismal record the last two seasons has brought down the value of the team.
Limbaugh has been a lightning rod for controversy in politics and even in the NFL. In 2003 he drew fire for suggesting that the media was unfairly promoting quarterback Donavan McNabb because they wanted to see an African-American quarterback succeed in the NFL.
