Zachary Christie: When Zero Tolerance Equals Zero Common Sense

Oct. 12, 2009

HispanicBusiness.com staff

Zachary Christie is a 6-year-old boy who's been education/12discipline.html?_r=2&hp" target="_blank">suspended from his Newark, Delaware school due to a zero-tolerance knife policy. The knife in question? A Cub Scouting accessory that also serves as a spoon, fork and bottle-opener.

Now young Mr. Christie may face 45 days' suspension in a school set up to deal with true delinquents.

On a Web site set up to plead his cause, www.helpzachary.com, Christie is presented as an above-average, serious and community-minded student. The site asks that well-wishers send Zachary a note of support and send a list of administrators notes asking that they use reason in administering this policy -- even if the local laws don't strictly allow it.

I wish little Zachary all the best. Hopefully he will not remember this time in his life and if he does he will teach his children what he has learned so they will not have to go through the same ridicule this child went through. AND, hopefully, his parents will know better not to send Zachary to school with something they do no know if it is allowed. Ask first! Good luck Zachary. And may you be blessed tenfold in your life!
