SanDisk Raises the Bar for CompactFlash Storage

Today, SanDisk announced its new 32GB SanDisk Extreme III CompactFlash card. Aimed at professional photographers and videographers, the company emphasized the card's large amount of storage space as well as its fast data transfer rate. The 32GB capacity is enough for 80 minutes of high-definition video, while the 30MB per second read/write speed ensures efficient, timely transfer of photos and video for upload and editing.

With such a large capacity, the card is well-suited for taking photos in the RAW format, which HispanicBusiness.com's photographer described as "equivalent to the latent image of a film negative." He explained that the RAW format contains all the raw data of a shot. As such, that data is not locked in and can be manipulated with far greater latitude than formats that take up less space, such as the jpeg format.

The only disadvantage HB's photographer sees in the announced product is that it might encourage a user to "put all of his or her eggs in a single basket." In other words, should the card freeze or encounter a glitch, a far greater amount of work could be lost than with than with the typical camera memory card. However, the company says that its cards are extremely durable, which should mitigate such a risk. SanDisk says that its Extreme III CF cards "possess the industry's widest guaranteed operating temperature, ranging from minus 13 degrees F to 185 degrees F."

The card will hit the shelves in October with an MSRP of $299.99.
