The American Idol: Cook vs. Archuleta, Tonight

The much anticipated showdown between the Davids is happening tonight on AMERICAN IDOL. The young 17-year-old, David Archuleta, has a screaming fan base of girls that has been placing him in the top spot all the way through the competition. Repeatedly, the judges have claimed that David could sing any song because of the quality of his voice. Archuleta's charisma and talent have earned him a place in the finals.

American Idol Judge Randy Jackson has said that David Cook is the "Most original, most bold contestant, we have ever had." Paula Abdul was quoted saying to Cook that, "You stretch the boundaries, without going over." These are just some of the lofty praise that Cook's has received from the judges. David has excelled with his ability to take well-known songs and change them into his own.

While high praise -- or lack thereof -- from the judges tends to have some bearing on the contest, the result is, ultimately, up to the viewers. At question is whether fans that have been watching all season will allow themselves to be swayed by Archuleta and Cook's performances tonight, or whether everybody's mind is already made up. If the latter, and the contestants are essentially just "playing out the string," it would seem Archuleta is the favorite, as he's been lauded as the heir apparent all season long in some circles. David Cook will have to "stretch his boundaries" even more; he may not be able to change Archuleta's fanbase, but perhaps he can absorb those who preferred Syesha Mercado, who placed third.

Either way, tonight's broadcast on Fox should at the very least offer some fine performances, as television's most popular show offers up this season's swan song.
