Humana Foundation Donates $300,000 to Florida Hurricane Relief Fund

PR Newswire

MIRAMAR, Fla., Sept. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Humana Inc announced today that The Humana Foundation has donated $300,000 to the Florida Hurricane Relief Fund for statewide disaster relief efforts.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Jeanne, the fourth hurricane to hit Florida over the past six weeks, Humana Florida Medicare Segment CEO Michael A. Seltzer and Humana Florida Commercial Operations CEO Craig Drablos will present Steve Uhlfelder, Fund CEO with a check for $300,000.

Florida has experienced an unprecedented 2004 Atlantic hurricane season. The Insurance Information Institute has estimated that the four hurricanes have resulted in an estimated total of more than $20 billion in damages and financial losses statewide.

Hurricane Jeanne on Sept. 18 and 19 knocked out electricity to more than 5 million Floridians. To date, relief efforts for Hurricanes Ivan and Jeanne include distribution of approximately 8 million meals, 3.6 million gallons of water and more than 21 million pounds of ice.

"Humana remains committed to the welfare of Floridians. It is our wish that this gift from The Humana Foundation will be utilized to assist those communities most heavily impacted, and that we can provide some recovery assistance to the thousands of Floridians impacted by Hurricanes Charley, Frances, Ivan and Jeanne," said Seltzer.

"We hope that with this grant from The Humana Foundation to the Florida Hurricane Relief Fund," said Drablos, "we can help in some small way the people of Florida recover from these terrible storms, and rebuild their lives and communities."

The Florida Hurricane Relief Fund was established by Florida Gov. Jeb Bush to assist the many Floridians in need following the widespread devastation caused by this season's deadly storms. The governor set up the statewide relief fund to assist Florida's communities in rebuilding and recovery. To date, the Florida Hurricane Relief Fund totals near $12 million.

"This represents The Humana Foundation's second donation within six weeks to hurricane relief efforts," said Uhlfelder. "On August 20, The Humana Foundation bestowed a $200,000 donation to the American Red Cross chapters in Charlotte and Lee counties following Hurricane Charley. We are overwhelmed with their commitment to rebuilding Florida communities."
