Hispanic Radio Address Congressman Raul Grijalva Air Date: Saturday, October 9, 2004 "Good morning. I am Congressman Raul Grijalva from Arizona.

"In a ceremony in Washington, D.C. this week, we honored the life of the late U.S. Senator Dennis Chavez of New Mexico. Senator Chavez was one of only three Hispanic Senators in U.S. history. His vision of hope, compassion, and civil rights brought prosperity to millions of Americans.

"Despite the accomplishments of Senator Chavez, there is much unfinished business. This Republican Congress has not responded at all to the real needs of the Latino people and as a result, the quality of life of all Americans has suffered.

"Republicans in Congress have neglected the public interest in favor of the special interests, while leaving more than 4 million Hispanic children without the child tax credit, denying workers unemployment insurance, and ignoring the needs of the 13 million Hispanic Americans without health insurance. They have said "no" to creating jobs, but "yes" to new tax loopholes for those who need them least. They have said "no" to our seniors, but "yes" to insurance companies and HMOs.

"Just yesterday, we saw the new Hispanic unemployment rate continue to be disproportionately higher than the rest of the population. And we watched Congress leave town without acting on the recommendations of the 9/11 Commission, which has put forward many important ideas for protecting America while preserving our civil rights.

The Republican agenda is clear: more tax cuts for the rich, a complete disregard for our nation's immigrants, and an assault on American working families.

"Democrats have a different vision. Our optimistic agenda would create 10 million new jobs over the next four years, enact middle class tax cuts, extend access to quality healthcare to all Americans, and ensure that every child has the tools to reach the American dream.

"We must honor the legacy of Senator Chavez, and open more doors of opportunity for our children.

"I am Congressman Raul Grijalva from Arizona. Thank you for listening." Office of House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi
