Lorraine Aragonís tough business savvy is hard to miss with her Brooklyn, N.Y., accent. And her keen management sense after 11 years with Aetna is sure to reveal itself. But what this 33-year old Hispanic woman is really about is family, which is why she saw a great investment opportunity and bought her own Mr. Appliance franchise in Tampa, Florida.
As a little girl in Brooklyn, Aragon can remember answering phones at her fatherís appliance repair business. Her brother became a good apprentice in the shop as well.
So when the family moved to Tampa, it was no surprise when a business called Kitchen Machine Repair was launched in 1988. Aragonís father built it into a thriving commercial service company with a 10,000 square foot building. Her brother joined the company, and followed in his fatherís footsteps. Meanwhile, Aragon spent years sharpening her business skills in the corporate world.
In 2002, Aragon began looking for a bigger challenge from her corporate job, and she looked no further than the family business.
"I was stuck in a position with no room for advancement," Aragon said of corporate America. "At the same time, my father was not ready to retire. My dad and my brother are hard-working men, but they needed a way to take the business to the next level." The answer for everyone was a Mr. Appliance franchise.
Aragon was immediately attracted to the idea of buying and owning her own business that would let her exercise her business skills. The franchise would also offer the national peer network, marketing and training support that would help her father and brother. She bought the franchise in 2003, and her father and brother rolled in their commercial business.
"My father has worked his whole life to leave something for our family," Aragon said. Now, as a franchise owner and with a daughter of her own, Aragon is doing the same thing. Being part of a close family with a strong Hispanic culture is what itís all about.
"I want to be the type of daughter that my parents are proud of, and I want to be the type of mother that my daughter looks up to," she said. Mission accomplished.
