Construction has been a genuine bright spot for the U.S. economy. The U.S. Commerce Department's Census Bureau reported in September that private-sector housing starts in August totaled 1.82 million units – down 3.8 percent from the revised July estimate of 1.89 million units but up 11.7 percent from the August 2002 rate of 1.63 million units.
The continued strength of the housing construction sector is partly a function of the nation's white-hot residential real estate market. A recent report from the National Association of Realtors indicated that sales of previously owned homes rose 5.5 percent to a record annual rate of 6.47 million in August, after rising 5.1 percent in July. Separately, the Commerce Department said sales of new homes rose 3.4 percent to an annual pace of 1.15 million units after falling 5.7 percent in July.
But for Hispanic-owned firms seeking construction and engineering contracts, many of the most exciting opportunities may actually lie beyond the super-charged domestic housing market. In fact, several of the firms whose contact information is presented at right routinely provide information online about the extent of their presence in foreign countries.
The companies listed here have provided contact information for contract solicitations. Interested minority vendors should direct their inquiries accordingly.
