DNC Chairman McAuliffe Speaks Out on the Administration's "Mariachi Politics"

WASHINGTON (PRNewswire) - The following is a statement by the DNC Chairman, Terry McAuliffe:

"The Hispanic community deserves more than a nice pat on the back and a few scattered words in broken Spanish from President Bush.

"While Democrats put the finishing touches on a significant legislative proposal that offers an opportunity for hardworking, tax-paying immigrants to live legally in the United States, Republicans are spending the day perfecting the art of 'mariachi politics' with a White House celebration that includes food, music and a photo op with 'el Presidente' Bush.

"The Bush administration is not only playing catch-up with their Hispanic outreach, it appears as if they suddenly remembered that this, indeed, is Hispanic Heritage Month.

"But Hispanic voters won't be fooled. They know the difference between token gestures and genuine commitment to their interests. They know that extremist Congressman Tom Tancredo is the true Republican voice on immigration policy. So it's typical and appropriate that while Republicans party in the White House, thousands of hard-working immigrants, along with Democratic Party leaders, gather across the street to push for real immigration reform.

"The Democratic Party will continue the fight to improve schools, improve health care, and to establish a comprehensive immigration policy that honors freedom-loving people who come from all over the world in search of the American Dream. They have been working and contributing to our country; they deserve to be treated with fairness, respect and dignity."
