The University of Texas School of Law has produced more Hispanic and African-American graduates combined than any other law school in the United States (with the exception of the historically African-American schools such as Howard University). The school’s 1,300-plus Hispanic alumni include a Texas Secretary of State, federal judges, and numerous leaders of the bar and government. “We are glad to be recognized for our efforts,” says Dean Bill Powers. “UT Law School is deeply committed to maintaining the law school’s preeminence in the legal education of Hispanics.”

“Estás en tu casa! You’re at home at St. Mary’s!” says Dean Bill Piatt, one of only two Hispanic law school deans in the country. From the 1940s forward, student enrollment at St. Mary’s has reflected the rich Hispanic heritage of the region. Hispanic graduates of the law school have included three members of Congress, state and federal judges, prominent personal injury and criminal defense attorneys, and a national president of LULAC. Applicants can expect a rigorous academic program, a welcoming environment, a supportive faculty, alumni mentors, and perceptive advice from the Office of Academic Excellence.

Stanford’s Office of Student Affairs, in conjunction with the Office of Admissions, sponsors a special recruiting weekend for minority students each spring. The weekend features substantive conversations with faculty, students, and alumni as well as social events officially sponsored by the Law School or hosted by current students. This year, the alumni panel featured two successful Hispanic lawyers speaking about their experiences at Stanford Law School and beyond. The diversity of the student body and, increasingly, the faculty is a factor in recruitment and retention of Hispanic and other minority students. The intimacy of the law school’s class size also fosters the sharing of cultural experiences, thus enriching classroom discussion.
