MEXICO CITY, April 18 - The Spanish-speaking world's largest communications group, Mexico's Televisa, is about to shut down its money-losing international news channel, ECO, according to news media in the Mexican capital.
While Televisa officials declined to confirm the reports, several ECO employees were quoted in broadcast and print media as saying the parent company was pulling the plug on the channel on Thursday.
ECO was launched 13 years ago by Emilio Azcarraga Milmo, Televisa's owner and president from 1970 until his death four years ago, with the aim of creating the world's top international news channel in Spanish.
Reports appearing in several Mexican dailies said all but 15 of ECO's more than 300 employees would be given pink slips.
