Spanish Becomes the Second Most Popular Radio Format

Feb 13 2001 12:00AM

Jim Lobe

PORTLAND, Oregon, February 13 - MeasureCast Inc., a company which provides Internet radio broadcasters and other streaming media content providers with next-day audience size and demographics reports, announced today that Spanish became the second most popular Internet radio format for stations measured by MeasureCast during the week of February 5-11.

Catapulting Spanish to the number-two spot -- behind talk radio -- was LaMusica.com, a newcomer to the MeasureCast rankings. Its New York-based LaMega/WSKQ-97.9 FM was the third most-listened to station (based on total time spent listening, or TTSL) in the weekly MeasureCast Internet Radio Top 25 List(TM).

LaMusica.com enjoys a reputation as a leading Internet destination for Hispanic people. It provides all terrestrial radio Web casting services for the Spanish Broadcasting System, which bought LaMusica in 1999. The company streams its on-line content through Globix Corporation.

The other Spanish broadcaster appearing in the MeasureCast Top 25 list is Morfeo, whose Onda Cero Internet-only station moved up a notch this week into the 24th spot.

Other facts from this week's MeasureCast reporting include:

-- 68 percent of Internet radio listening occurred between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. PST
-- 89 percent of listening occurred Monday-Friday; 11 percent over the weekend
-- On-line radio listening continues to be dominated by men (72 percent)
