Minority Vendor Resources to Contract with Petroleum Companies

Jan 31 2001 3:33PM

January/February 2001 - After several years of keeping a low profile, the major oil companies are finding themselves back in the news. Spiking crude prices and a spate of mergers have put the spotlight on big oil, an enormous market in the U.S. industrial supply chain.

The importance of petroleum as a prime fuel for the economy means that these companies function on numerous levels and serve a variety of markets.

From the drilling site to the corner gas station, petroleum companies maintain a presence, and they deal with many suppliers and business partners.

The products that oil companies purchase include chemicals, computers and electrical equipment, steel pipe, machinery, and office supplies. They also need services such as transportation, scientific research, environmental services, management consulting, and logistics work.

Minority vendors seeking contracts with Fortune 1000 companies should call the numbers listed on this page to learn about each corporation's supplier development program. Five companies on the list – Amerada Hess, Crown Central Petroleum, Kerr-McGee, Murphy Oil, and Ultramar Diamond Shamrock – don't maintain formal minority contracting offices, but handle all supplier development through their purchasing departments.
